Bollywood’s one of the finest actor Irrfan Khan dies at the age of 53

Successive of Shoojit Sircar’s tweet, the actor’s publicist confirmed the news

Irrfan Khan – Indian National Award-winning actor and a cancer fighter, whose movies are a masterclass in brilliant smooth acting, died in Mumbai after fighting a medical difficulty emerging from colon infection. The actor was 53 years old and is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two kids Babil and Ayan.

The news of his demise was confirmed by the actor’s publicist:

Khan’s spokesperson stated, “‘I trust, I have surrendered'”; these were some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heartfelt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen,”.

He further added, “It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heavenly abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, ‘As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it’.”

Khan’s director and close friend Shoojit Sircar also confirmed the news of Khan’s death by saluting Khan on twitter saying, “My dear friend Irfaan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you. We shall meet again,”.

They both had worked together in the Bollywood mega-hit ‘Piku’. The director even stated that Khan’s wife Suthapa Sikdar was found beside her husband. The actor had spent most of 2018 and 2019  in London fighting the high-grade neuroendocrine tumor. He was one of India’s finest actors who even understood the grammar and structure of Hollywood Films.

The Indian National School of Drama graduate was last seen in director Homi Adjania’s Angrezi Medium, a heart-touching father-daughter story, in March 2020. Owing to the sudden coronavirus outburst that led to the closure of cinema halls, this movie could not enjoy non-stop screening at the theatres worldwide. Despite this, Khan had sketched a successful career filled with cinematic gems and was seen in over 100 Hindi films.

Khan didn’t hail from any known acting dynasty but his command over craft and magnetic screen presence worked wonders for him. He began his career by acting in TV serials including ‘Banegi Apni Baat’.  Looking at his role as a scholarly migrant father in ‘The Namesake’ or as the merciless rebel in ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ or the aging widower in sumptuous romance ‘The Lunchbox’, Irrfan had the energy to put in grace and dignity in any role that he played. Even his work in movies like ‘Piku’ and ‘Haider’ was a brief crash course on subtlety which left a lasting impression. He even paved his way in Hollywood and worked in celebrated movies including ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Life Of Pi’  amongst others.

For an actor who believed in the economy of emotions – he smashed the conventional standards of Bollywood and established his own benchmarks of excellence. In the past, he did not just present his films at the Dubai International Film Festival and Abu Dhabi Film Film Festival but also was honored with the highest civilian honor Padma Shri in 2011.

In one of his last interviews, he said that he was optimistic and didn’t let his disease define him. In his latest film ‘Angrezi Medium’ he did all the heavy weight lifting himself and proved that he still got it. Khan further added that he fought this grim period by playing this iconic song in his head, ‘Lag Jaa Gale Ki Phir Yeh Haseen Shaam Ho Naa Ho, Shayad Is Janam Mein Mulaqaat Ho Na Ho’. While life may have waved him off, his cinephiles won’t be able to let go of his splendid acting and roles any time quickly.
